Cocaine Addiction Facts

A common myth states that cocaine is not an addictive drug because it lacks the physical withdrawal symptoms seen in alcohol or heroin addiction. However cocaine is a drug associated with powerful psychological addictive properties and as the UKs number one abused stimulant, more and more people are seeking help in overcoming this addiction, but how best to?

cocaine-addictionThere are currently no drugs that can be used in cocaine addiction treatment. Such potential drugs are being tested, but for now Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT remains the most tried and tested method. Essentially this involves using psychiatric treatment to develop new coping skills which ultimately lead to cocaine being replaced by other, healthy stimuli.

In practise, this psychotherapeutic approach – or talking rehab, means sufferers from cocaine addiction are often best served checking into some form of cocaine rehab. Very few complications of cocaine abuse can be treated in the home. There are several inpatient and outpatient treatment centres for cocaine abuse, both in the UK and abroad.

Residential rehabilitation is for many sufferers the only solution to total abstinence from taking cocaine. Residential rehabilitation – or rehab – is an umbrella term for a treatment programme, be it CBT, 12 Step, Therapeutic Community, etc. These all have in common their emphasis on abstinence combined with intense support and care programmes in order to cure the addiction.

Newer models of cocaine rehab have been developed which rely on supported housing linked to treatment, however traditional residential treatment- whereby the sufferer ‘checks-into’ a rehab centre, in a complete break from their everyday environment and crucially, in a drug-free environment are still thought to be most effective.
