Organised criminal gangs in China are shipping ‘legal highs’ into the UK as the government attempts to control the multi-million pound trade, reports the BBC.

The investigation, carried out in China by the BBC, found that labs routinely send legal highs to the UK by courier, some of the packages are often labeled as “birthday gifts”.

Brits Take the Title of Heaviest Drinkers

More people in the UK drink twice a week than those in the US and Australia, according to a new survey.

The study, carried out by Maxus, a media agency for the drinks industry, examined the drinking habits of 6,500 people in the UK, Germany, America, Australia and China.

The results showed that 66% of the British participants drank at least twice a week, followed by China with 63%, Australia 62% and Germany 57%.

The drug Liraglutide currently used to help manage type 2 diabetes and obesity could potentially be used to treat alcohol addiction, researchers have found.

Studies show that the drug was able to suppress the effects of alcohol on the dopamine system, reducing the pleasurable effect that alcohol has therefore decreasing a person’s motivation to drink.

Brain Patterns Reveal Negative Traits Such as Drug Abuse

A person’s brain wiring patterns can reveal a person’s negative traits such as a family history of alcohol or drug abuse, researchers report in Nature Neuroscience.

The findings are the first from the Human Connectome Project (HCP); an international effort to map active connections between neurons in various parts of the brain. The HCP was launched in 2010 and seeks to scan the brain networks of 1,200 adults, a project that will cost US$40 million.
